First bottle feeding

Joey is one month old today! Joey drank milk from a bottle for the first time tonight. Daddy fed him with a bottle and it went smoothly. I am happy to have reached this milestone, and to have pumping and bottle-feeding under way.

Weight check

Joey and Mommy went to a breastfeeding Mothers Circle today. I checked his weight while we were there. He was 7 lbs 11.5 oz. and that means he has gained an average of 1.7 oz/day in the last 2 weeks. Very good!

Yesterday my mom helped me clean and sterilize all the breast pump parts and bottles. I pumped some milk last night. I will try to pump again tonight to start building a supply for when I return to work at my day job.

Sleeping on the rug

I only meant to set him down for a moment, and he fell into a deep sleep on the rug. Such a sweetie. Those rosey cheeks are from the baby acne that started a few days ago.

Joey is 3 weeks old

Here's Joey with Gran Gran. He is 3 weeks old today. See how he folds his hands--with fingers interweaved. He's been doing that since day 1 (and probably did it in the womb, too). So cute! The guitar shirt and pants are a gift from Gran Gran.

Dad's Day at preschool

Bob spent the morning at Juni's preschool for "Dad's Day". From 9:30 to 11:30, he joined Juni with her classmates and their dads, and got to see what the morning routine is like at her school. He drew a picture with her, read books, played with playdo, had snacks, did a puzzle, and met other dads. Here are 2 pictures taken by the teachers.

Juni and Joey

Yesterday Juni came home from preschool with a bag full of valentines. She calls them her "valentine toys". This morning Bob gave her a temporary tattoo on her arm. It is a race car tattoo and it came with one of the valentines. I have picked Juni up from school a few times lately and brought Joey with me in the kangaroo korner pouch/sling carrier. Juni has asked me to show Joey to some of her friends. She is very proud of him. Her teacher told me that Juni has seemed very happy at school lately. She's excited to be a big sister. Yesterday she asked me if we were going to give Joey away when he gets bigger to be someone else's daughter (she meant son). I told her we were going to keep Joey and Juni forever. She seemed okay with that. I thought about how friends/family visit us and then leave. Maybe that's what Juni thought Joey would do--just visit for a short while. It is so fun to watch Juni learn about her world. She's also fascinated with the fact that Joey doesn't have any teeth. "How did that HAPPEN!?" she asked me when I first told her that he doesn't have teeth yet. So cute.

Joey went to his doctor today for 2 week check-up. He weighed 6 lbs 7.2 oz. He gained 13.2 oz in one week! I was hoping he'd be 6 lbs but he's nearly 6.5 lbs which makes me very happy. So my milk is working. He's eating enough and growing. We can see a difference. We are starting to dress him in some newborn size clothes (outgrowing the preemie sizes) and he is looking bigger.

Laundry basket nap

We wanted to keep an eye on Joey while doing chores in the kitchen. Laundry basket worked as a bassinet. At least for a few minutes until he got squirmy.

Tummy time

Joey's first chiropractic adjustment

Joey saw our family chiropractor when he was 6 days old. (No cracking involved at this age.) The doctor said his neck was a little off, which could be affecting his latch. Joey has some trouble sometimes latching on one side but is fine on the other side. The adjustment should help. He was very mellow during the visit. So pleasant to be with, this baby is.

5 days old

A new outfit this afternoon because we had a messy diaper that got on his cute whale shirt that he was wearing earlier. His poop has changed from the dark tar-like newborn poop to a yellowish brown poop. I'm sure you wanted to know that! The point is that it means he is drinking enough milk and getting rid of the extra bilirubin.

He's 5 days old today. We gave him a sponge bath this morning. Then he had another partial sponge bath after the messy diaper. Yesterday and the day before we were letting him suck on our pinky fingers (which he really liked doing), or on a pacifier when he would take it, to soothe him. Now I realize he was hungry, waiting for more milk to come in. Now that I have more milk, he is not at all interested in my pinky finger. I guess he doesn't want to suck just for the sake of sucking if his belly is full. These pictures were taken right before a feeding, so you can see him saying "feed me now, please" in the second shot.

Grammy visit

Grammy came over to take Juni to the zoo today, and have a sleepover at Grammy & Poppops house tonight. In the first picture, Grammy and Juni are looking at Juni's new watch (a gift from Grammy) and telling what time it is. Juni is learning to look for what number the little hand points to, so she can tell the time. She asked me "how many minutes is it?" instead of what time is it, because she's used to us saying "5 more minutes" and setting a timer. Juni is also learning to take pictures with our phones. The one of me holding Joey, with Bob in the background, is a photo by Juni.

Sunday morning

Here are the two critters surrounding me this morning. Notice who's sleeping independently in the co-sleeper bassinet! My milk "came in" last night and Joey slept more soundly. My milk supply seems to have caught up with his demand, at least for last night it did. He's doing great. He pees and poops the right amount according to the doctors. He had another blood test yesterday and he's a little bit more on the normal side now for the bilirubin amount (test for jaundice). So we are moving in the right direction.
